What This Season is Teaching Me

138: What This Season is Teaching Me

I recently shared a post about the lessons I’m learning this month. I received a lot of positive feedback so I was inspired to create this episode to go a little deeper into these lessons.

A lot of these things we already know, but we need to be reminded of them because the day-to-day gets in the way.

In this episode, I share...

  • Ways to fix a lot of the problems you’re facing

  • How to slow down and take care of yourself

  • Why you should always be kind

The text from my full post, Lessons from October, is as follows:

Most deadlines are made up. Nothing in what we do is an emergency. Take your time with what you work on and produce quality designs instead of rushing to finish things because of external stressors.

You can’t be “on” and creative constantly, and that’s okay. There’s a lot of pressure as creatives to constantly be ON IT, but truthfully, creativity is mentally draining and requires rest, space, and inspiration. Work with clients who honor that.

Everything can be fixed with transparent communication. No one knows how you feel unless you tell them - no one is a mind reader. (Goes for business and personal relationships.)

Life is short. Savor the little moments. Enjoy quiet mornings. Sip on your coffee. Don’t eat lunch at your desk. Stretch in the mornings.

You can get as much done in 4 hours of focused work as you can of 8 hours of half-assing it. Create a schedule that works FOR you, not everyone does well with a 9-5 schedule.

This is it. The life you’re living right now is what you’ve worked so damn hard for. Stop striving and never arriving. Truly sit with the idea of how far you’ve come. Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.

Prioritize your sleep and rest. Wellness is a business decision.

Stop overthinking. You’re not responsible for the expectations, or feelings, of other adults. You can’t be for everyone and that’s okay.

If you feel overwhelmed, take a deep breath, walk away, come back, and make a brain dump list of what you need to do. Then, start with one thing.

Reply to the oldest emails first. Average email response times should be 48+ hours. Keep this expectation for yourself, and for others.

Know that you don’t get another October until next year. Halloween passes and then BOOM it’s the holidays. Then it’s 2023. You deserve to enjoy your life. Slow down.

BE KIND. You genuinely never know what someone is struggling with behind-the-scenes. Just be kind.
